Introduction “One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God”- Matt. 4, 4 Jesus, the Son of God, the Word made flesh; came to earth more than two thousand years ago and lived for thirty-three years amongst us. During the last three years of his life He taught us through stories (parables) and through actions (miracles) and through commands. Pope Francis has asked us to take a renewed interest in the message of the Gospels and to use this knowledge to evangelize those around us. In the Gospel of Matthew, much of what Jesus is noted as saying comes forth in the form of commands. This small booklet will reflect my meditations on 21 of these commands and will illustrate, in a practical way, how we can follow them in our daily lives. -Keith Wayne Phillips

5) “…do not worry about your life..”-Matt. 6,25 “what you will eat (or drink), or about your body; what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?...can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life span?...Your Heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil.”-Matt. 6, 25-34 In these words, Jesus commands us to stop worrying about our life and its circumstances; and that we must trust in God; that He will provide all that we truly need. We are to learn from the way that the flowers grow, and the grass in the field; God provides for them. The birds of the air and all of God’s creatures and processes of this world are well in hand, under God’s watchful eye. Nothing in God’s creation worries except man. We have been given the power of rational thought but we abuse it by questioning God’s purpose for us and His ability to take care of us. We venture down the road of self-reliance and self-sufficiency and soon find that we have lost our way. But Jesus tells us to seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all that we need, will be provided. If we focus on eternity, rather than what soon fades away, we will soon find that most of our day to day worries will have no meaning. We are to clothe ourselves with the mantle of Christ; we are to eat of his body and drink of his blood through the Eucharist. We are to trust in his word and in his Church; and thus pattern our lives in complete faith in the promises that he has made to us. Jesus asks us to live in this moment, with our focus on eternal life in Heaven with our Heavenly Father. If we can do this for a few moments, then perhaps we can maintain this focus for an hour, and then a day, and then a lifetime. We have no need to worry if our eyes are fixed on preparing our souls and the souls of others for Heaven. Only by complete trust in Jesus as the Way, the Truth, and the Life will our life and its circumstances have any real meaning.
