Description
The diary of Charles Edward Wells, World War I American Expeditionary Force Engineer.

Summary
Charles Edward Wells deployed to France, and we join him there in the summer of 1918, following a vicious attack wherein he lost his first diary. We then see the full scale of war through his eyes. Not only the mortal danger of combat, but also a good bit of what happens to a soldier when he's not on the front line. This realism makes the combat all the more jarring when it does happen. For the reader is not inundated with a constant sense of mortal peril, but also experiences the drudgery of war that makes the mortal peril feel fresh and allows the reader to relate more to the every day experiences that also occur during war.

Excerpt
This morning and this afternoon the lieutenant, three non-coms, and myself, went out looking over the outposts that we are to put barb-wire around tonight. While on one of the posts the Huns began to shell it, so we had to take cover in a shelter that was under observation. While in there the Huns tried to hit it with two-tins, so while the shelling was on we had to leave double time, so we left, we had a couple close calls.
