Description
Bhagwan Swaminarayan, a spiritual leader and social reformer, was born on 2 April 1781 in Chhapaiya, near Ayodhya, and was known as Ghanshyam in his childhood. Displaying extraordinary intellect, he mastered Sanskrit scriptures and defeated scholars in debates by the age of ten. At eleven, he renounced worldly life and became Nilkanth Varni, embarking on a seven-year journey across India. He eventually settled in Gujarat, where he met Ramanand Swami, who appointed him as his spiritual successor in 1801, naming him Sahajanand Swami. He later became known as Swaminarayan, performing miracles and inspiring countless followers with his spiritual teachings. He established a spiritual order of 500 paramhansas, promoting celibacy, non-violence, and moral discipline. Bhagwan Swaminarayan worked to uplift society by promoting education, social reform, and charity. He opposed social evils like female infanticide, sati, and animal sacrifices. He emphasized equality, welcoming people of all faiths. To ensure moral purity, he established separate worship spaces for women and encouraged spiritual growth through devotion. His teachings are preserved in the Vachanamrut and Shikshapatri. He constructed six grand temples and inspired followers to adopt virtuous lives. After tirelessly working for 30 years, Bhagwan Swaminarayan passed away on 1 June 1830 at the age of 49. The spiritual succession continued with Gunatitanand Swami, followed by Bhagatji Maharaj, Shastriji Maharaj, and Yogiji Maharaj, who spread his teachings worldwide. Pramukh Swami Maharaj further expanded the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha into a global organization with over 1,000 temples, 3,700 Satsang centers, and 950 sadhus. Pramukh Swami Maharaj dedicated his life to promoting moral values, education, and social service, inspiring millions to lead righteous and spiritual lives. His humility, wisdom, and deep connection with God made him a respected global spiritual leader.
