Description
Kodagu province, which was a 'C' State earlier to reorganisation, is a beautiful green country spread on the laps of western ghats of the Southern Part of India. It stretches over 5600 sq.km with Madikeri, Virajpet, Somwarpet as the three Revenue Taluks. This province, now a district, has its own people, culture and heritage. The history of Kodagu is traceable from second century A.D onwards from the edicts left behind by various kings and kingdoms who ruled here. The earliest rulers from 2nd century till 6th century are found to be Kadambas of Tamil Nadu. They were followed by Gangas of Mysore Province till about 11th century and then Cho1as, Chengalvas and Hoysalas till about 17th century . Later on, ·Ikkeri kings from Shimoga known as Haleri Kings ruled from 17th century till about the early part of the 19th century. Thereafter the British annexed Coorg within its rule and administered till Indian Independence. (Source -Rajendraname). After India got its freedom, Coorg was formed into a 'C' State under the Central government of India and had its own legislature, executives and Judicial System which were all integrated into the State of Mysore in the year 1956. Since then, it has been part of the Mysore State, later named as Karnataka and the name of province of 'COORG' is also now changed as 'KODAGU'. Since the ancient historical times, till the advent of the British, the administration of Justice and the rule of law in this province was the domain of the Kings, u_nder the concept of those times that~ "The King can do no wrong''. There were no codified laws and the mandate of the King always prevailed. However after the British took ove!, for better control and administration, during the later part of the 19th century the various laws and procedure were promulgated and codified. Simultaneously, the administrative agencies like the Judiciary and the Police department were also introduced.
